The Hills are Alive
Thursday dawned a brisk gray day. Callie sat on her hands trying to keep them warm. She gazed at the clock just below the radio. 7:36 a.m. “When do you plan to tell me where we’re going?”
“You know I can’t just sit around and wait for someone else to find answers. I’m certain Powell’s command center is in the CIA Archives Facility. It makes sense to scope it out before he’s released from jail, don’t you think?” Jack asked.
“Yes, I agree.” Anxiety had already crashed over her. She lifted her to-go cup and sipped on her Starbucks, letting her fingers absorb the warmth from the cup.
The engine of Jack’s SUV roared, rebelling against the steep grade of the hill. Jack pointed to the majestic coast. “I forget how breathtaking some of these Highway 1 views are.”
The waves pounding the rocky coast rang like cymbals and she swore she heard the distant song of seals. How she wished she could soak in the view.
“How long do you think Rick and his gang have had possession of the CIA Archives Facility?”
Jack looked in her direction. “No telling. For all we know, the S.O.B. has been working there for years.”
She stared out the window. “It’d be prettier if it wasn’t so gloomy.” She didn’t think the gray haze held much beauty. Sunshine sang to her soul.
Her eyes blurred as she shifted them to the east, taking in evergreen-covered mountains that were the backdrop for the golden brown hills hugging the road. Though the color resembled that of autumn leaves, for some reason, today the mountain resembled a beast. Ridged edges gray in color. Spiky trees prickling the hillside. How odd. She’d lived in California for over ten years and never once saw anything but beauty.
“I’ve never been out to this archive facility, have you?” She glanced at Jack.
“No. I’ve always known it was here, but never understood why they built it out in the middle of nowhere.”
“Maybe it was Rick that built it?” Her heart skipped to think he might have.
“I doubt that. This place has been here since the Sixties.” He braked for a red light. “What time do we need to get Kate and head to Salinas?”
“Mr. Cramer said to be at the courthouse at 3:30 p.m.” Callie glanced down at the directions in her hand. “This is it, Castillo Drive. Turn here.” She pointed to the left. “What if something happens and we can’t make it in time?”
“Nothing is going to happen.” He reached over and caressed her arm. The love in his touch slid right through her.
Within seconds of turning, a three-story building came into view. The aged brown bricks married well with the hillside. Part of the building might have even resided underground.
Jack eased the car over onto the bumpy shoulder. “Crap, there’s a security checkpoint.”
“No worries. We can just show our IDs.” Callie grabbed her purse.
“I can’t. APB, remember?” He shot her a grumpy glance.
“Fine. Let me drive and I’ll schmooze my way in,” Callie said.
